Danish Institute for Voluntary Effort

Connecting actors in the social welfare sector

The Danish Institute for Voluntary Effort (DIVE) is the national, independent centre for development, competences and knowledge for volunteering in the social welfare sector. Our purpose is to strengthen and develop volunteering, active citizenship and civil society in Denmark.

Our role is to bring together knowledge and experience from practice from stakeholders involved in social volunteering.

DIVEs position in the Danish publically funded infrastructure landscape

We are one of several publically funded institutions in Denmark that work for and with social volunteer work. Below are the three main publically funded institutions and the level of involvement, each one representing and providing invaluable help and assistance for the social volunteer sector in Denmark:

Level

Institution

Ministry

Strategic  and political level

The National Council for Volunteering (Frivilligrådet)

Ministry of Social Affairs and the Interior

Tactical level

Danish Institute for Voluntary Effort (DIVE)

Local  and operational level

Volunteer Centres and Self-help Denmark (FriSe)

Our role in this landscape is to build bridges between the political and operational level. We work in and with all levels to provide relevant and current data, information, processes and. We are non-political and non-member based, and therefore work from a stance of neutrality.

Through our work, we:

  1. Make data about volunteering available to the media, scientists and international organizations
  2. Deliver information and research about volunteering to relevant state departments
  3. Support Volunteer Centers, associations, individual volunteers and companies by offering research, network, conferences, books and courses about volunteering
  4. Provide a neutral and relevant meeting platform.

We publish a national longitudinal report on Volunteering (Frivilligrapporten), which combines and presents quantitative data about volunteering in Denmark, describes the terms under which associations work, as well as the development in how municipalities, associations and volunteers work together.

Our primary tasks are to provide:

  • Consultancy: qualified and focused consultancy to associations, volunteers and municipalities about subjects that strengthen the collaboration between stakeholders as well as within individual associations.
  • Training and courses: courses to volunteers, employees in associations and municipality employees who work in collaboration with volunteers.
  • Analysis and data: focused development processes, evaluations and analyses for associations, organisations and municipalities.
  • Knowledge: current and relevant information from studies about and research in social volunteering in Denmark and internationally.
  • Networks: national professional networks for consultants working in organisations and municipalities. Stakeholders can also use us as a safe and neutral meeting platform.
  • Project Volunteer: an inter-sectoral programme directed at young people attending high school and college in Denmark. The programme facilitates and promotes volunteering to young people as a way to develop competences and get a social network.

Every year we…

  • Make 60 user’s guides available
  • Offer 250 courses, webinars and training sessions
  • Send out 12 newsletters
  • Receive 840 questions in our counselling service
  • Carry out 100 tasks in or for associations and municipalities
  • Publish 1-4 books
  • Host seminars and conferences
  • Facilitate 4-6 networks
